WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU softball team got its first wins of the season in style Saturday afternoon; the Hornets swept Peace College 5-4 and 6-1 in a non-league doubleheader.
Shenandoah (2-11) had not won since defeating Gallaudet University 3-2 in the second game of a doubleheader on April 13, 2002, a span of 15 games.
Freshman Caroline Crocker (Stanardsville, Va./William Monroe) was a major part of the Hornets snapping the losing streak; she hit a home run to start the Hornets three run rally in the fifth inning of game one and then struck out a career high seven in the game two victory.
SU won the opening contest with two runs in the first and three more in the fifth. After Peace (8-10) had taken a 3-2 lead with three run of its own in the fifth, Crocker got things started in the bottom half of the frame.
Following her home run, Gina Reimenschneider (Winchester, Va./James Wood) singled, stole second and scored on Nikki Braithwaite's (Winchester, Va./James Wood) double to left center. Jodi Milburn (Winchester, Va./James Wood) then plated Braithwaite one batter later with a sacrifice fly to left.
Reimenschneider earned the win on the mound with a four strikeout complete game performance. She scattered five hits, four runs (three earned) and seven walks.
Game two was never in doubt as SU scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to the 6-1 victory. Reimenschneider was 2 for 3 with an RBI while Braithwaite capped her day with a 2 for 2, 2 RBI outing.
