STAUNTON, Va. - Mary Baldwin capitalized on five Shenandoah errors Sunday afternoon to defeat SU 5-0 and 8-7 in a non-league softball doubleheader. The game two loss came in eight innings.
SU (3-19) out hit the Squirrels (14-16-1) 5-2 in the first game and 12-9 in the second, but came up on the short end of the scoreboard both times.
The game two loss was especially difficult; Shenandoah led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth and had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the eighth but could not score.
MBC won that contest when Tiffany Morris reached on a error by shortstop Jen Jones (Radiant, Va./Madison County) and Katie Spicer, who was placed on second base to start the inning under the international tiebreaker rule, came around to score.
Caroline Crocker (Stanardsville, Va./William Monroe) and Gina Riemenschneider (Winchester, Va./James Wood) both had three hits in five at-bats for SU; Riemenschneider also drove in three runs.
Shenandoah had five of the seven hits in game one, but was able to advance runners into scoring position in three of the seven frames. Jones, Riemenschneider, Nikki Braithwaite (Winchester, Va./James Wood), Erin West (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) and Shea Riemenschneider (Winchester, Va./James Wood) all had one hit apiece for the visitors.
