WINCHESTER, Va. - Freshman Leanne Gibson (Woodbury, N.J./West Deptford) recorded her first collegiate goal, but Shenandoah University's women's soccer team still fell to visiting Emory & Henry, 4-1, Saturday afternoon in the second game of the 2003 Shenandoah Shootout.
Shenandoah (0-1) got off to a slow start in the first half, falling behind the Wasps (1-0) thanks to a pair of unanswered goals from E&H; freshman Tarra Wardrup (Limestone, Tenn.) in the 31st and 44th minutes.
Almost immediately following an E&H; goal in the 63rd minute, Gibson broke the ice for the Hornets with her score at the 65:54 mark to cut the visitors' lead to 3-1.
Shenandoah could not capitalize on the momentum and 10 minutes later Wardrup iced the contest for the Wasps with her third goal of the match.
Sophomore Megan Ross (Harrisburg, Penn./HACC) recorded nine saves in a losing effort for the Hornets while her counterpart, Alexis Salemme (Pittsburgh, Penn.), had five stops in the E&H; victory.
Both teams return to the pitch again tomorrow for day two of the Shenandoah Shootout as the Hornets take on Waynesburg College at 2:00 and Emory & Henry will face Wilmington (Ohio) College in an 11:30 match.
Wilmington defeated Waynesburg 10-0 in the opening game, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 49-2.
