WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University made it interesting for a while Tuesday evening in its USA South Conference volleyball match against league leader CNU, but the Captains pulled away in a 3-1 victory.
Shenandoah (14-15 overall, 5-7 USA South) got the match to even by winning game two 31-29 after dropping the opener 30-16, but Christopher Newport (27-6, 11-1) won going away 30-18, 30-16.
SU held a four-point lead on two occasions in game four before the Lady Captains Amber Bradshaw reeled off six straight points from the service line to turn a 16-14 lead for the hosts into a 20-16 CNU lead. The Lady Captains then preceded to give up just one more point after Bradshaw was knocked off the serve on a Christina Greene (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) kill.
Bradshaw led CNU with 16 kills while Jesica O'Neal added 15 and Tricia Nelsen 10. Brittany Collins had 39 assists.
Greene had 12 kills for the Hornets, who also got 10 from senior Hannah Williams (Salem, Va./Glenvar). Her fourth kill of the night also gave Williams 1000 for her career. She is one of just three SU players to accomplish this feat; the last was Ellie Tanner '00.
Greene led the defense as well with 21 digs while classmates Jenna Warrenfeltz (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) and Michelle Chandler (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) added 11 and 10, respectively.
