GREENSBORO, N.C. - Greensboro College ended the Shenandoah University women's soccer season Tuesday afternoon with a shootout victory in the USA South Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
After the two teams battled through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime without either squad finding the back of the net, GC was able to prevail in the shootout session.
Third seeded Greensboro (6-10-3) got a goal from Meredith Carroll in the first round of sudden death shootout; Shenandoah's Ana Quinones (North Augusta, S.C./Iowa Central CC) was stopped on her attempt just prior to Carroll's try.
As per NCAA rules, the game is officially recorded as a 0-0 tie, but the Pride will advance via the shootout sudden death tie-breaker. The two teams ended the five round shootout each scoring three goals; Kim Smith (Odenton, Md./Arundel), Leanne Gibson (Woodbury, N.J./West Deptford) and Katie Martin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Deer Park) all converted for SU (7-11-3).
Hornets keeper Lauren Elliott (Lynchburg, Va./EC Glass) made 10 saves, including six in overtime, to keep her club in the game. GC outshot Shenandoah 20-1 and had four of the game's five corner kicks.
