WINCHESTER, Va. - Guilford College used a strong first half to propel the Quakers to a 23-4 victory over host Shenandoah Saturday afternoon in non-league NCAA men's lacrosse action.
GC (3-1) got 12 points from attackman Josh Miller on four goals and eight assists and five goals from Bryan Borchard to give the Quakers their 10th win in 11 lifetime meetings against Shenandoah (0-1).
Guilford made SU pay dearly for its mistakes; the Hornets committed 10 penalties for nine minutes and GC scored seven goals with the extra man. Perhaps the biggest of these penalties came at the start of the second period. SU was whistled for an illegal stick right before the face-off and the Quakers scored two goals on the ensuing non-releaseable one minute extra man opportunity.
GC controlled the game by scoring seven of the games first eight goals and did not allow Shenandoah to score more than one goal in each period. The Quakers led 4-1 at the end of one before blowing the game wide open with eight goals in the second and nine more in the third. Miller accounted for two goals and three assists during this span while Borchard added three goals and an assist.
SU goalie JD Killian (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) finished the day with 15 saves, but was helpless against 55 Quakers shots. GC also won the battle of groundballs 41-34 and controlled 16 of 29 face-offs.
Senior Joe Gorczyca (Grosse Point Park, Mich./Grosse Point Park North) had two of the Hornets four goals.
