Mary Baldwin Sweeps

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah dug fell behind early in both ends of a doubleheader against visiting Mary Baldwin College Wednesday afternoon and saw the Fighting Squirrels come away with a 10-2 and 14-10 sweep.

SU (3-8) gave up four runs, three unearned, in the first two innings of the opening game before the defense warmed up and began shutting down the Mary Baldwin (7-4) offense.

Unfortunately for Shenandoah, MBC expanded its 4-0 lead through four innings with six more in the top of the fifth. The Hornets answered back with a pair of their own in the bottom of the inning, but the eight run deficit caused the game to be halted by the NCAA mercy rule after five innings.

Sophomore Gina Riemenschneider (Winchester, Va./James Wood) went all five innings for SU and gave up only five earned runs while falling to 3-4 on the year.

Shenandoah once again spotted MBC a 6-0 lead in the nightcap, but the Hornets' bats came alive in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 6-5 behind the strength of freshman Teresa Prezzy's (Winchester, Va./James Wood) two-out bases loaded single that drove in a pair.

The Hornets' joy was short-lived, however, as Mary Baldwin batted around for the second time in the game and added six runs in the top of the third inning to take an insurmountable 12-5 lead.

SU made a valiant comeback attempt as starting pitcher Kim Hill (St. Paul, Va./Emory&Henry;) helped her own cause with a two-RBI single in another five-run fifth inning for the hosts, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.

The freshmen tandem of Alicia Sanders (Wardensville, W.Va./East Hardy) and Prezzy combined to go 6-9 with six RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases in game two.
