WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU men's lacrosse team used strong senior performances at both ends of the field Saturday afternoon to defeat Cazenovia College 15-7 before 231 fans at Shentel Stadium.
Shenandoah (1-1) got four goals and two assists each from seniors Elmer Baker (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O'Neill) and James Hernandez (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa./HCC) to go along with a career high 23 saves from goalkeeper J.D. Killian (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) to get the win over Cazenovia (1-4).
The Wildcats actually had more shots on goal, 30 to 27, than host SU, but Killian was dominant in his second outing of the year. The senior had an eighth best in school history 23 saves, including 10 in the second period.
The Hornets used Killian's excellence to extend their lead from 5-2 at the end of one to 9-3 at the break and never let CC within eight goals the rest of the way.
In addition to Baker's and Hernandez' four goals each, Justin Ratcliff (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) had three goals and Sam Johnson (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) two. Johnson also helped SU control possession by winning 16 of his 20 face-offs and added eight of his team's 51 groundballs.
Shenandoah won 19 of 26 draws on the day, including all eight in the first quarter.
Bill Rabuano had six goals for the visitors.
