WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team split a double-header with USA South opponent Greensboro College Sunday afternoon at Henkel-Harris Field, 1-7 and 6-4.
The significance of the victory in the latter game went far beyond being the first conference win for SU (4-11 overall, 1-7 USA South) this season. The 6-4 win over the visiting Lady Pride (8-8-2, 1-4-1) was the first league triumph for the Hornets in 65 games - a timeline that spans three head coaching tenures and just over six years. The last time Shenandoah posted a win over a USA South/Dixie Conference opponent was on March 14, 1998 when the Hornets handed Averett a 12-11 loss.
SU seemed to have the visitors on the ropes early in the first game when freshman Carrie Harris (Front Royal, Va./Warren Co.) singled to left center with two outs in the bottom of the third game to drive in sophomore Gina Riemenschneider (Winchester, Va./James Wood) for a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets' good fortune would not persist, however, as Greensboro catcher Bailey Cotton's two-run double in the top of the fourth inning lifted the Lady Pride to a 2-1 lead and a pair of SU errors in the following inning would put the game soundly out of reach, 6-1.
Shenandoah took control firmly in the second game when an RBI single from senior Jodi Milburn (Winchester, Va./Lord Fairfax CC) and a sacrifice bunt by junior Shea Riemenschneider (Winchester, Va./James Wood) each brought in a run to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead in the last half of the fourth inning. SU would put the Lady Pride in a 4-0 hole before the end of the side when Milburn scored on a throwing error by the Greensboro shortstop.
GC rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one run, 4-3, but a two RBI double from Milburn in the bottom of the inning extended the Shenandoah lead to three runs once again, 6-3.
Kim Hill (St. Paul, Va./ Emory & Henry) pitched five complete innings for SU in the win before letting Gina Riemenschneider take over and hurl a pair of hitless innings to pick up her first save of the season.
