WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah's softball team struggled at the plate Saturday afternoon as Peace College swept a USA South double-header with the Hornets at Henkel-Harris Field, 8-0 and 4-2.
SU (5-14 overall, 1-9 USA South) was held to five hits in the opening game but led the majority of the nightcap until the Pride (10-11-1, 5-4-1) stormed back for three runs in the top of the sixth inning to steal the victory.
Both teams failed to cross the plate in the first three innings of the first game, but the Pride blew the contest wide open with six runs (four earned) on six hits and an error in the top of the fourth inning.
Peace starting pitcher Lauren Pleasant nestled in behind her lead and cruised to the win by striking out nine SU hitters while allowing one walk and five hits in seven complete innings.
The Hornets yielded one run in the top of the first inning of the second game, but settled down and earned a 2-1 lead in the latter half of the third inning on a two RBI single from third baseman Gina Riemenschneider (Winchester, Va./James Wood).
Unfortunately, Shenandoah gave away the lead when the Hornets allowed three runs to cross in the top of the sixth inning to give Peace the come-from-behind win.
