Softball Stymied by Averett

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah's softball team saw its current losing streak extended to five games Sunday afternoon when the Hornets were swept in a USA South double-header by the Lady Cougars of Averett, 0-16 and 3-11.

SU (5-16 overall, 1-11 USA South) was held to just four hits in the opening game whereas the Lady Cougars (11-13, 5-1) were able to belt out 16 runs (seven earned) on 16 hits to force Shenandoah into mercy-rule submission after the fifth inning.

The second game started out on a brighter note for the Hornets when Carrie Harris (Front Royal, Va./Warren Co.) had one of her team-leading two hits in the top of the first inning to drive in a run and give SU a 2-0 advantage.

That success, however, would be short-lived as Averett scored three runs in the top of the third and never looked back.

Shenandoah committed seven errors in the second game, causing only two of the Lady Cougars' 11 runs to be earned, but, earned or unearned, the mercy rule took effect once again after the fifth inning and AU walked off the field with an 11-3 win.

Shenandoah no travels to Mary Washington College for a non-conference double-header on Wednesday beginning at 3:00.
