RALEIGH, N.C. - Chowan College completed day one of the 23rd Annual USA South Conference softball tournament Friday night by eliminating No. 9 Shenandoah with a 2-0 victory.
Chowan (25-15) moves on to face seventh seeded NC Wesleyan Saturday morning in an elimination game. Shenandoah finishes its season with a 10-22 mark.
The Lady Braves advanced to day two of the tournament by scoring unearned runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The Hornets committed errors to lead off each inning; both miscues led to Chowan getting unearned runs.
In the fourth, Meryah Breeden reached on an error by shortstop Melissa Landon and came home on a Kayla Meacom double to rightfield. In the sixth, Meacom reached on an error by second baseman Ginger Burket and scored one out later. Annie Whiteman gave CC the insurance run with a single to center.
There was just 10 hits total in the 75 minute game; Meacom had two for the victors and Carrie Harris added two for Shenandoah.
