WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University kept its USA South Conference record unblemished Wednesday night with a 78-71 USA South Conference overtime men's basketball victory over Ferrum College before 493 at Shingleton Gymnasium.
SU (12-5, 4-0 USA South) survived a game-tying three-pointer by the Panthers Kenny Johnson with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to win its fifth straight victory over Ferrum (5-11, 2-3 USA South).
The Hornets had a chance to win in regulation, but seniorÂ
Chris Rhonemissed two free throws with nine seconds left. Johnson then had a 12-footer at the buzzer to win it, but the shot went off the back of the rim.
Shenandoah opened the overtime by going on an 8-2 run but the game was as close as four points with 15 seconds remaining. Fortunately for the home fans, SU made 11 of its 13 free throws in the final 58 seconds.
Rhone led the victors with 26 points whileÂ
Onyie Onunaku turned in another double-double with a career high tying 21 points and 13 rebounds. He also had five blocks.
Johnson led all scorers with 29 points, Ed Robinson added 12 and Rafael Holland 10.
