Softball Drops Opening Doubleheader

DANVILLE, Va. - Defending USA South Conference champion Averett University used a pair of strong pitching performances Sunday afternoon to sweep visiting Shenandoah University 2-0 and 9-1 in the Hornets 2005 season opener.

Averett (3-9, 2-2 USA South) held Shenandoah (0-2, 0-2 USA South) to just a combined four hits in the two contests.

SU got its lone run of the doubleheader in the top of the first as freshman Jessica Bollinger singled to right and advanced to second on a error by Lady Cougars rightfielder LaToya Jones.

After Alyssa Chapman advanced Bollinger to third when she reached on a throwing error by shortstop Melanie Gilbert, Sheryl Wilson drove in Bollinger with a sacrifice fly to left.

Sophomore Theresa Prezzy had the Hornets other hit in game two.

Wilson and Chapman each had game one hits, but Heather Mull and Stephanie Greene combined to throw at two-hit shutout for AU. Mull struck out six in the first four innings before Greene pitched the final three to earn the save.

Chapman took the game one loss; she only gave up five hits and did not walk a batter in the complete game outing. Catelyn Renninger was touched for nine runs (only five earned) on 10 hits in game two. Both women are now 0-1 on the year.

Shenandoah is back in action on Wednesday in a non-league doubleheader against Hood College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00.
