RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shenandoah University softball team played possibly its strongest doubleheader of the spring Sunday afternoon in splitting its USA South Conference matchup with Peace College.
Shenandoah (4-6, 1-4 USA South) won game one 1-0 before Peace (10-11, 2-3 USA South) game back to win game two 3-1.
SU made a single run in the second inning of the opener stand up to get the squad's initial USA South Conference victory of the season.
FreshmanÂ
Tana Bartek led off the frame with a single and then advanced to third on a throwing error by PC third baseman Sarah Heenan. One batter later,Â
Carrie Harris reached on an error by Pacers pitcher Joanie Blevins (2-2), driving in Bartek in the process.
FreshmanÂ
Alyssa Chapman made the one run stand up as she struck out seven against five hits and just one walk to even her record at 2-2. This is also her first career shutout.
Unfortunately, three Hornet errors in the nightcap led to two unearned runs in the 3-1 Peace victory. Shenandoah attempted to rally with a single run in the fifth, but Erica Rutledge was able to snuff out the SU comeback bid.
Chapman was 3 for 3, Bartek 2 for 3 with an RBI andÂ
Teresa Prezzy 2 for 3 to lead the Hornets offense.
Bartek took the loss - she struck out four in the complete game performance and is now 1-2 on the year.
