Softball Loses Tournament Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. - Top seeded Methodist College pushed across a pair of runs in the second inning to propel the Lady Monarchs to a 4-1 victory over No. 8 Shenandoah in the opening round of the USA South Conference softball tournament.

Methodist (30-8) sent SU into an elimination game at 7:00 tonight against fourth-seeded NC Wesleyan. The Lady Bishops were upset by No. 5 CNU in the other 3:00 contest Friday afternoon.

Shenandoah (9-20) got its only run in the fifth inning when sophomore Teresa Prezzy got a two-out single to left, stole second and scored when Kristin Windle reached on an error by MC shortstop Kim McCall.

Freshman Catelyn Renninger took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits and one walk in six innings. She also struck out three.

The Hornets had three hits in the game - one each by Prezzy, Sheryl Wilson and Tana Bartek.
