WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University had its chances Wednesday afternoon, but a combined 13 errors led to 5-3 and 11-5 non-league losses to Chowan College at Henkel-Harris Field.
Shenandoah (11-23) committed seven errors in game two, including five in the eighth inning alone. Tied 4-4 after the regulation seven innings, Chowan (18-19) sent 10 batters to the plate in the eighth to blow the game open.
All seven of the Lady Braves runs in the frame were unearned, making freshman
Catelyn Renninger the hard-luck loser. Renninger (3-8) gave up 11 runs on 12 hits, but all but one of the runs were unearned.
As much as SU struggled defensively, they still had a chance to win the game before going to extra innings. The Hornets had the winning run in scoring position with one out and had runners on second and third with two outs, but sophomore
Tarrah Armstrong struck out on three pitches to end the inning.
Freshmen
Jessica Bollinger and
Natalie Tull both had two hits for the hosts while classmate
Heather Kepple drove in two runs with a fourth inning single to left.
Chowan waited to get the game-winning runs in its last at-bat of the first game as well.
Tied at 2-2 heading into the seventh, CC scored three runs on three hits to take a 5-3 lead. Shenandoah answered with one run and had runners on the corners with two outs, but Bollinger popped to first to end the contest.
Teresa Prezzy had one of the Hornets five hits in the game and drove in a pair of runs with a fifth inning infield single and a sacrifice bunt in the seventh.
Freshman
Tana Bartek (4-9) took the loss. She gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks in seven innings. Bartek also struck out two.
