SALEM, Va. - Regional power Roanoke College kept its perfect softball record intact Saturday afternoon with 17-0 and 2-1 non-league wins over visiting Shenandoah University.
Roanoke (8-0) used an 11-run second inning of the opening game to help end it after 4 1/2 innings but had to hold on in the nightcap. Shenandoah (3-7) made things interesting in that contest by scoring one run in the top of the seventh inning.
The Hornets cut their game two deficit in half as freshmenÂ
Katie HaskinsandÂ
Kristen Templeton led off the frame with walks. Following a strikeout, pinch hitterÂ
Kristin Windle singled to drive in Haskins from second. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Maroons caught Templeton straying too far from second base behind the play and recorded the second out of the inning.
With only Windle on base, freshmanÂ
Ashley Ballentine grounded out to first to end the game.
Haskins (2-3) was the hard luck loser after giving up two runs on six hits and one walk. She also had two strikeouts.
Shenandoah was held to three hits in the opener - one each byÂ
Sheryl Wilson ,Â
Jessica Bollinger andÂ
Alicia Sanders . Wilson and Sanders also had hits in the nightcap.
