WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University staged a seventh inning rally Wednesday afternoon to salvage a split of its USA South Conference softball doubleheader with visiting NC Wesleyan.
Shenandoah (3-5, 1-1 USA South) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win game two 5-4. NC Wesleyan (6-2, 1-1) was a 7-2 winner in the opener.
The Hornets got the winning runs in their last at-bat when pitcherÂ
Katie Haskins walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and to third whenÂ
Alicia Sanders singled to left.
Jessica Bollinger brought home Haskins with an infield single before freshmanÂ
Catherine Beuerle tied it with an RBI single to center. SophomoreÂ
Sheryl Wilson then won it for the hosts with an infield hit to second base - Wesleyan attempted to cut down Bollinger at the plate but the sophomore slid around the tag for the game-winning run.
Haskins improved to 2-3 on the spring by going the distance in the pitching circle. Only one of the four runs she surrendered was earned and she had seven strikeouts against six walks and six hits.
Libby Fulford (4-2) took the loss after winning game one. She allowed the five runs on 10 hits and four walks in the nightcap after holding SU to just three hits in the opener. She had 11 total strikeouts on the day - six in game one and five in game two.
Beuerle kept her season-long hitting streak alive with 2-for-3 and 1-for-3 performances, respectively. Sanders and Wilson both had two hits in the nightcap.
