Methodist Shuts out Softball

BURLINGTON, N.C. – Top-seeded Methodist College made it two shutouts in two games at the USA South Conference Tournament with a 5-0 victory over eighth seeded Shenandoah University Thursday morning.

Methodist, 34-6 and ranked No. 10 in the nation, scored two runs in the second and three in the fourth to dispatch the Hornets (13-22). The Lady Monarchs face the winner of the NC Wesleyan vs Christopher Newport game Thursday at 3:00. Shenandoah has an 11:00 a.m. Friday date with the loser of that NCWC/CNU contest in an elimination game.

MC sent eight women to the plate in the second inning as they scored two runs on four hits off of SU starter Tana Bartek (3-10). Sara Poling led off the frame with a double to left center, moved to third on LaTiana Headen's single to left and scored when Candace Hudgins singled to center. 

Lisa Jackson then singled to left to plate Headen before Shenandoah got out of the inning with two groundouts and a flyout.

Starting pitcher Jessica Hutzul (6-0) pitched five scoreless innings before giving way to Mara Brown for the final six outs. Hutzul allowed three hits and walked one while striking out two.

Poling had four of the Lady Monarchs 11 hits on a 4-for-4 afternoon that included a run scored. Alicia Sanders was 2-for-4 for the Hornets.
