NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University kept its perfect all-time softball record intact Sunday against Shenandoah University with a USA South Conference doubleheader sweep over the visiting Hornets.

CNU (18-14, 5-7 USA South) won its 34th and 35th straight games over SU (9-17, 2-8) with 10-2 and 9-6 wins. Game one was halted in the fifth due to the NCAA mercy rule.

Shenandoah held a 2-1 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third inning of game one, but the Lady Captains tied it in the bottom of the frame and broke it open with six runs in the fourth.

Sophomore Jessica Bollinger provided those two runs with a two-run home run, her first of the season, that scored Kristin Windle . Windle had reached on a walk.

Sophomore Tana Bartek (3-8) took the loss in the pitching circle after giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks in 3.2 innings.

SU fell victim to the big inning in the nightcap as well. After erasing an early 3-0 deficit with one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth, the Hornets saw their hosts re-take the lead with a six-run fifth.

Windle and Bollinger led the offense again in game two – Windle was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in with Bollinger adding two hits in three at-bats. She also drove in one run, as did Bartek and pitcher Katie Haskins

Only three of the nine runs Haskins allowed were earned. She also gave up 12 hits and four walks against three strikeouts.
