ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Host North Carolina Wesleyan staged a pair of late game comebacks Sunday afternoon to sweep Shenandoah in a USA South Conference softball doubleheader.

NCWC (9-1, 2-0 USA South) won game one 3-2 before taking the nightcap 4-3. The Hornets (1-7, 0-4) held leads in both contests but were unable to close out victories.

Shenandoah scored two runs on one hit and two Lady Bishops errors in the third inning of game one, but could only watch as NCWC rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the victory.

With two outs in its last at-bat, Wesleyan sandwiched a walk around two singles off of Katie Haskins (0-4) to get itself back in it. The second hit, an infield single by Krystal Newbern, made it 2-1 in favor of the Hornets.

Shortstop Ashlee Bass then stepped to the plate and drilled a walk-off double to right center that scored Shelly Hinson and Denise Pope.

Bass had two of the Lady Bishops six hits off of Haskins, who struck out five and walked three.

SU had just two hits in the game, one each by Haskins and freshman Brittany Bailey . Bailey drove in the initial run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth inning of the nightcap, Shenandoah took its second lead of the contest with a two-run fourth. Both of the squad's runs were unearned in the frame - Alicia Sanders scored on a Bass throwing error and Mandy Reed on a passed ball.

Unfortunately, the Lady Bishops had another rally in them and they completed the sweep by scoring two runs in the fifth off of Bailey (0-1), who had come on in relief of classmate AJ Lekki in the middle of the third.

Bailey allowed the two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks in 3.2 innings of action. She struck out one.

Reed led the Hornets game two offense with two hits while Haskins, Christin Carlo and Jolisa Jones all had one each.

Box Score

Shenandoah is back in action tomorrow afternoon in a non-league doubleheader against Salem College.
