Hornets Knock Spirit from Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Shenandoah University softball team registered its first doubleheader sweep of the 2007 season Monday afternoon with 10-0 and 14-1 non-league victories over Salem College.

Shenandoah (3-7) improves to 3-7 overall with the two wins over the Spirits (0-16).

In game one, SU scored two runs in the first, two more in the third and then three in both the fourth and sixth innings to end the contest via mercy rule.

Sophomore Katie Haskins didn't need the extra offensive support as she earned her first win of the spring by allowing just one hit and two walks in the complete game performance. Haskins is now 1-4 this season.

Offensively, Mandy Reed and Brittany Bailey each had two hits with Haskins driving in three runs on one hit in four trips to the plate.

The Hornets ended the nightcap two innings early by scoring 10 runs in the top of the fifth. SU had a 17 hits in the victory, including three each from Ashley Ballentine and Jolisa Jones.

Sophomore catcher Catherine Beuerle was also 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Freshman AJ Lekki allowed one run on six hits and one walk to earn her second straight victory. She struck out three.
