FERRUM, Va. - One day after posting its first USA South Conference doubleheader sweep in 10 years, the Shenandoah University softball team downed host Ferrum 3-0 and 7-2 in another conference twinbill.
The two wins give Shenandoah (10-10, 4-4 USA South) a .500 record at its latest point in the season since 1992 and also sets a new school record for conference victories.
SU got all of the runs it would need in the opener by scoring a pair on three hits in the top of the second off of FC starter Kryestyn Matherly.Â
Kristen Templeton opened the frame with a double to left beforeÂ
Jolisa Jones reached on an infield single.
Jessica Robertson then plated Templeton with the game-winning run on a single up the middle. The next batter,Â
Mandy Reed, drove in Jones with a sacrifice fly to center.
This was more than enough run support forÂ
Katie Haskins (4-6), who tossed a five-hit shutout. She walked two but struck out seven to give the Hornets just their fourth-ever victory over the Lady Panthers.
Templeton finished the contest 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Jones was 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Haskins continued her strong work from the pitching circle in the nightcap - she recorded the last six outs to earn her second save of the weekend. FreshmanÂ
AJ Lekki (5-3) allowed one run on five hits in five innings before turning it over to Haskins to start the sixth.
Haskins was 4-for-4 with two runs scored at the play and Jones put the finishing touches on her outstanding afternoon by driving in three runs on two hits in four at-bats. Templeton also had a pair of runs batted in.
Ferrum falls to 8-16 overall and 1-7 in the league with the two losses.
