LYNCHBURG, Va. - Host Lynchburg College swept Shenandoah
University in a pair of non-league softball games Saturday
afternoon at Moon Field.
The LC Hornets (3-1) were 5-2 winners in nine innings in the
opener and came back to defeat the SU Hornets 8-2 in the nightcap.
Shenandoah (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the opener when junior Catherine
Pruiett led off the sixth with an infield single, advanced
to second and scored when Lynchburg had a throwing error as Pruiett
advanced from second to third on an Ashley
Plaugher groundout.
LC scored two runs of its own in the top of the seventh take a
one-run lead, but Pruiett came through with an RBI groundout in the
bottom of the frame to knot the contest at 2-2.
Following a scoreless eighth, Lynchburg won it with three runs
on two hits off of SU losing pitcher Brooke Over. Over
(0-1) was outstanding in the contest, striking out a career-high 15
batters and walking just one in the complete game showing.
LC jumped on freshman Amanda
Litwin for three runs in the second and two more in the
sixth to take total control of the nightcap.
Litwin (0-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits and
six walks in 6 1/3 before turning it over to classmate Ashley
Stegemiller. Stegemiller allowed three runs on five hits in the
remaining 2/3 of an inning.
Pruiett, Jolisa Jones and
Lauren
Wall all had two hits each for coach Marlena
Kotynski in game two.
Shenandoah played as the home team in the doubleheader because
it was originally scheduled for Winchester and had to be moved to
Lynchburg because of the continued snow cover in the northern
Shenandoah Valley.
SU is back in action beginning on Friday at the Virginia
Wesleyan Tournament.
