Softball Continues Winning Ways

ASTON, Pa. –  Shenandoah University ran its winning streak to four games over teams that participated in the 2009 NCAA Tournament with a pair of non-league victories over Neumann Wednesday afternoon.

Shenandoah (7-3) swept a doubleheader from No. 1 in the nation and defending national champion Messiah College Tuesday, and continued its winning ways against the Knights (2-7).

SU was a 10-3 winner in the opener before taking game 7-2. The nightcap was called after five innings due to darkness.

In game one, the Hornets jumped on NU for three in the top of the first, and after Neumann tied it with a three-run HR in the bottom of the frame, went on top to stay with two more in the second.

Freshman Emmalie Spina had a two-run single in the first with Ashley Plaugher driving in the second inning runs on a two-run double to center.

Coach Marlena Kotynski's club added three runs in the fourth with Shatora Lane plating two on a single to right and Spina knocking in one with a single to right center.

Lauren Wall capped the scoring for game one in the fifth by drilling a two-out, two-run double to left center.

Sophomore Brooke Over (3-2) went the first 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. She had five strikeouts before turning it over to freshman Ashley Stegemiller for the sixth and seventh. Stegemiller allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out one to preserve the victory.

Spina finished the contest 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and Plaugher drove in three on three hits in five at-bats.

A six-run fifth fueled the game two victory with Plaugher, Wall and Jolisa Jones all driving in two runs each.

Plaugher got things started with a single to right, Jones cleared the bases with a triple to right center and Wall completed it with a dinger over the center field wall.

Freshman Amanda Litwin (4-1) won her fourth straight decision, striking out six and walking one in the (abbreviated) complete game performance.

Shenandoah is returns to the diamond on Friday and Saturday at the Salisbury University Tournament. The Hornets face Wilkes and the host Sea Gulls on Friday and both Allegheny and Virginia Wesleyan Saturday.
