BURLINGTON, N.C. - Freshman Amanda Litwin took a no-hitter into
the seventh inning Friday afternoon to help the Shenandoah
University softball team to a 7-2 win over Averett University.
The elimination game victory sends Shenandoah (19-16-1) into a
Saturday morning loser's bracket contest against Peace College.
SU got all of the offense it would need with one run in second
and three more in the third. Two Averett (6-25) errors led to all
three third inning runs being unearned - junior Catherine Pruiett
drove in two of them with a single to center.
The Hornets put the finishing touches on the victory with one
run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Shenandoah banged out 16
hits in the game with all but one starter getting at least one
hit.
SU didn't need most of that offense as Litwin was nearly perfect
through the first six innings. The frosh had just a first inning
walk preventing her from perfection and she retired 16 in a row
before giving up an infield single to start the seventh.
A pair of clean singles followed; Litwin then settled down to
record the last three outs via groundouts to the left side of the
diamond.
Three women: Jolisa Jones, Renoula Jones and Shatora Lane, had
three hits each with Denise Mitchell and Lauren Wall contributing
two each for the victors.
