WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University ended its 2010 softball
season Friday evening with a non-league doubleheader sweep at the
hands of the York (Pa.) Spartans.
Sophomore Brooke Over held York (35-8) to just one hit in the
opener, but the Spartans made it count in a 1-0 victory.
In the nightcap, YCP scored eight runs in the second on its way
to a 12-3, 5-inning victory.
Shenandoah (21-19-1) was victimized by four costly errors in
that second contest that led to seven of the eight runs in the
second inning being unearned.
SU actually had led game two, 1-0, when Ashley Plaugher plated
Jolisa Jones on a groundout to second. Jones led off the Hornets
first by reaching on an error and then moved to third when YCP
couldn't handle a Renoula Jones sacrifice bunt.
York broke things open with that eight-run second, scored one in
the fourth and then ended matters with a three-run fifth.
The Hornets got another Plaugher RBI in the bottom of the fifth
of the second game, but could not score enough runs to extend the
contest.
Freshman Amanda Litwin (10-9) allowed nine runs on 12 hits, but
just two of the runs were earned.
Game one was a pitchers duel between Over (11-9) and Brittany
Therres (26-5), with Therres scattering four singles and Over
holding the Spartans hitless for the first 5 2/3.
Catcher Julie Norris, who drew a one-out walk, scored the
eventual winning run when Heather Bormann doubled down the
leftfield line.
Over struck out eight and walked three; two of those walks came
in the sixth.
Therres won both contests, striking out four hitters in each
game.
Plaugher led SU at the plate by getting two hits in both ends of
the doubleheader.
