WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University snapped its
four-game softball losing streak Monday afternoon by splitting a
USA South Conference doubleheader with league leading Ferrum.
Shenandoah (13-12-1, 5-7 USA South) was a 4-0 winner in the
opener before Ferrum (21-11, 9-3) came back to win the nightcap
3-2.
SU led game two 1-0 after junior Catherine
Pruiett led off the Hornets third with a triple to dead center
and then came home on Jolisa
Jones' single up the middle.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, a chance for multiple runs went
by the wayside when Jones was cut down at third on Lauren
Wall's single into short left.
The Panthers combined three hits in the fifth off of game two
starter Amanda
Litwin (6-6) to score a pair of runs and then scored what
proved to be the game-winner on an unearned run in the sixth.
Shortstop Shelbie Hall, who had reached on a single up the
middle, moved into scoring position when a pickoff throw from
catcher Denise Mitchell to Wall at first went wide.
Two pitches later, Megan Barger drove in Hall with a single up
the middle for the decisive third run.
Shenandoah answered that run with one of its own on an RBI
double by freshman Emmalie
Spina, but it was not enough.
Winning pitcher Hannah Shumaker retired SU in order in the
seventh to earn her fifth win in eight decisions.
In game one, sophomore Brooke
Over (7-6) threw a two-hitter and struck out eight as the
Hornets won 4-0.
Over's offense gave her all the support she would need
with one run in the second, but SU added to the advantage with
another in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
Spina plated what proved to be the game-winning run on an
infield single that scored pinch runner Samantha
Robson from third.
Over didn't need the extra help as she retired the
Panthers in order in the second, third, fourth and seventh and
allowed just two runners into scoring position. She carried a
no-hitter into the sixth; leadoff hitter Kashina Hancock broke up
the no-no with a bunt single to first.
Second baseman Lauren
McCabe led the Hornets offense with two hits in three at-bats
and also drove in a pair of runs.
Shenandoah continues USA South Conference play Tuesday afternoon
at Mary Baldwin.
