STAUNTON, Va. - Visiting Shenandoah University registered a pair
of shutouts Tuesday afternoon in a USA South Conference softball
doubleheader with Mary Baldwin.
Shenandoah (15-12-1, 7-7 USA South) was a 7-0 winner in the
opener before taking the nightcap 9-0.
Game two was shortened by the NCAA mercy rule to five innings.
The Hornets got all of the offense they would need in the first
inning of the opener by scoring seven runs on six hits and one
costly MBC (2-29, 0-14) error.
Centerfielder Jolisa Jones drove in
the final two runs with a triple into the right-center gap while Lauren
Wall, Lauren McCabe
and Catherine
Pruiett had RBI singles.
SU would need no more offense as pitchers Brooke Over (8-6)
and Ashley
Stegemiller combined to throw a no-hitter.
Over struck out seven and walked two in the first 5.0 innings
before Stegemiller retired the final six hitters in order to
complete the no-no.
The no-hitter is the second of the year for the team - Over
posted her first career gem on March 27 against N.C. Wesleyan.
Game two was a virtual replay of the opener as Shenandoah scored
all nine of its runs in the first inning and then pitchers Amanda
Litwin (7-6) and Stegemiller tossed a two-hitter.
Litwin allowed a third inning single and a fourth inning
double to miss a second consecutive gem, but struck out four and
walked two in 4.0 innings.
Stegemiller hit her opening batter in the fifth before retiring
the next three to close out the contest.
Offensively, junior Ashley Plaugher
was 2 for 2 with five RBI on a three-run HR and a two-run double in
the first.
Shenandoah is back in action on Friday in another USA South
Conference doubleheader against Peace.
