WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University headed into its final
USA South Conference softball weekend of the regular season with a
doubleheader sweep over Peace College Friday afternoon.
Shenandoah (17-12-1, 9-7 USA South) was an 8-1 winner in the
opener before taking the nightcap 10-2.
Game two ended in the sixth inning due to the NCAA mercy
rule.
Peace (15-20, 4-12) actually led game one 1-0 after scoring one
run on one hit and a walk in the top of the first.
However, this would all the offense the Pacers would be able to
generate against sophomore Brooke Over (9-6).
Over allowed just two hits and struck out 12 in the complete
game performance. She had at least one strikeout in every inning
and struck out the side in both the second and fourth.
Offensively, SU sent 10 women to the plate in the first as it
scored six runs on seven hits. Junior Ashley Plaugher had a two-run
double from her No. 3 spot in the order to give the hosts a lead it
would not relinquish.
A seven-run third inning of game two gave the Hornets a
commanding 8-0 lead - Jolisa Jones had a double and a triple in the
frame as the team had six of its 15 hits off of PC pitcher Hannah
McLeod (0-2).
Freshman Amanda Litwin (9-7) pitched the first 5.0 inning for
Shenandoah before turning it over to classmate Ashley Stegemiller
for the sixth. Litwin allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits
and four walks.
Freshman Emmalie Spina ended the game by driving a bases-loaded
single back up the middle to score Lauren Wall from third. Wall had
led off the SU sixth with a base on balls.
Plaugher and freshman Lauren McCabe each had three hits in the
nightcap while Renoula Jones and Catherine Pruiett did the same in
the opener.
Shenandoah is back in action Saturday at noon in a USA South
Conference doubleheader against Methodist.
