Softball Avenges Angels

Box Score

BURLINGTON, N.C. –  Shenandoah University moved to within one game of the 2011 USA South Conference softball championship with 10-0 elimination game win over Meredith College Saturday evening.

Shenandoah (24-14) wasted little time in jumping on the Avenging Angels (16-22), scoring three runs in the first to take the early lead.

Senior Jolisa Jones led off with a solo shot to left center before Renoula Jones reached on a single through the left side.

Following a strikeout and flyout, Morgan Coble drew a walk to put a second runner on base. Sophomore Denise Mitchell brought them both home by driving a double into the same gap where Jolisa Jones hit her home run.

In the second, Heather Sink drove both Joneses with a double to right. Jolisa Jones got the two-out rally started with a single to right and Renoula Jones drew a base on balls.

The Hornets added two more unearned later in the frame thanks to an error at first base that allowed both Sink and Ashley Plaugher to score.

The offense was more than enough for junior Brooke Over (17-7), who just missed her second no-hitter of the season. Over struck out 10 and allowed only a fourth inning single to Arielle Stout in the picking up the victory.

Sophomore Jordan Wolford worked a scoreless fifth to close out the contest.

The win puts SU into a 10:00 contest Sunday morning against Greensboro. The winner of the that game will face Christopher Newport for the championship.

Jolisa Jones and Lauren McCabe both had two hits in the victory.
