Women's Tennis Wins Again

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University continued its winning ways to start the 2012 women's tennis season with a 5-4 non-league victory over Hood College Saturday night.

The Hornets (2-0) took a 2-1 lead after doubles over Hood (2-3), but found themselves in a battle during the singles.

SU found itself just one victory from clinching the match after Shannon Allin and Kayla Green won 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively, at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, but the Blazers had other ideas.

Mabie Tun began the Blazers comeback with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5 over Ilana Rozin before Sandra Dziadas outlasted Kelsey Brewster 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Hornets.

This left two matches: Carla Wong versus Emily Maerz at No. 1 and Rachel Gross versus Nalla Tejera at No. 6, on the Winchester Country Club courts.

With Wong and Maerz locked in a three-set marathon, Gross came through for the hosts by dispatching Tejera 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the victory.

Maerz ended up providing the final margin by winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 over Wong in the top singles match.

Green and Gross were both double winners for SU, with Green and Rozin winning 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and Gross teaming up with Brewster to win 8-5 at No. 3.

Wong and Allin fell 9-7 in the top doubles match.

Shenandoah is now off until March 13 when it travels to future ODAC rival Randolph for a 4:00 non-league match.
