Women's Tennis Sinks Ship

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's tennis team celebrated its return to the court with a 7-2 victory over Shippensburg Saturday night in its season opener.

The Hornets (1-0) won the season opener in strong fashion over the Division II Red Raiders (0-6).

SU opened the match by taking two of three doubles matches, as Carla Wong and Shannon Allin won 8-2 at No. 1 while Rachel Gross and Kelsey Brewster were 8-6 winners at No. 3.

Kayla Green and Ilana Rozin fell 8-4 at No. 2.

Shenandoah then clinched the match with victories in the top four singles matches.

Wong dominated Kat Werner at No. 1 winning 6-1, 6-1 before Allin took out Cassie Sidone 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2.

Green evened her record at 1-1 on the night with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 to give SU the required five points to clinch.

Brewster matched Green with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 and Gross provided the final margin with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 6.

The Hornets are now off until February 18 when they host Hood in another non-conference match held on the indoor courts at Winchester Country Club.

Notes: The match was the first for the team in nearly a year. The 2010-11 season was cut short after SU had played five matches.
