LYNCHBURG, Va. - Shenandoah University was swept in a pair of non-league tennis matches Tuesday afternoon at future ODAC rival Randolph College.
Playing in their first outdoor matches of the spring, the SU men fell 8-1 and the women 5-4 to the WildCats.
The lone victory for the Hornet men (0-3) came at No. 1 doubles. Dustan DeMello and Vladimir Daskalov defeated Dnaiil Lyalko and Mitch Franko 8-3.
Lyalko and DeMello also staged a marathon match in No. 1 singles, where Lyalko came out on top 7-6 (3), 5-7, 1-0 (14-12).
The remaining five singles matches went in straight sets.
In the women's match, the 'Cats (4-0) made a 2-1 advantage hold up against Shenandoah (2-1).
Carla Wong and Shannon Allin were 8-4 winners at No. 1 doubles with Allin picking up a second victory by downing Anna Culpeper 3-6, 7-6 (14-12), 1-0 (10-8).
The No. 2 singles match was one of three that went to a third set. Patricia Verdezoto defeated Wong 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) at No. 1 while Kaitlyn Kolster topped Kelsey Brewster 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-0) at No. 3.
The final two singles matches, Nos. 5 and 6, were played as eight-game pro-sets. Brier D'Arcy clinched it for RC by winning 8-2 at No. 6.
Both teams are back in action Wednesday afternoon at Lynchburg. Play begins at 3:00.
