WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's and women's tennis teams dropped a pair of non-league matches to Stevenson University Thursday afternoon in their first outdoor home matches of the spring season.
The Hornet women (4-3) fell 5-4 while the men (0-7) were swept 9-0.
Matt Smith had the closest match for the men, losing 6-3, 1-6, 0-1 (7-10) to Anthony Carle at No. 5 singles.
The women gave it a great effort, winning four of the seven contested matches, but lost after having to forfeit at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles due to an injury.
Sophomore Carla Wong and freshman Shannon Allin were both double winners, with the pair opening the day with a 9-8 (7-3) victory at No. 1 doubles.
Wong then won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 and Allin 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2.
The Hornets other victory came from Rachel Gross at No. 4. She was a 6-2, 6-3 victor over Katie Fersch.
Stevenson improves to 3-1 for both its men and women.
The SU women are back in action tomorrow in a USA South Conference match against Meredith.
