WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's tennis team completed its regular season with a 5-4 non-league victory over Southern Virginia Monday evening.
The Hornets (8-7) had to outlast both Southern Virginia (8-5) and Mother Nature to complete the victory.
Starting at 5:00 on the Lowery Tennis Courts, SU and the Knights were locked in a 4-4 tie with Ilana Rozin and Shelly Rowberry also tied at No. 6 singles in the only match remaining.
Rozin had won the first set 6-3 and had a couple of chances to clinch in the second, only to see Rowberry to come back and tie it with a 7-6 (8-6) win in the second.
At 2-2 in the third, a rainstorm desended upon the northern Shenandoah Valley, necessiating a move to the indoor courts at Winchester Country Club to complete the match.
Rozin came through for SU, winning four straight games to seal the victory for the hosts.
Shenandoah had taken a 2-1 lead after the doubles thanks to wins from Carla Wong and Shannon Allin at No. 1 and the duo of Kelsey Brewster and Rachel Gross at No. 3.
Southern Virginia rallied with wins in Nos. 3, 2 and 4 singles (in order) to take 4-3 lead.
Wong brought the match back to even with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1, setting the stage for Rozin to clinch it at No. 6.
The match completes the regular season for the Hornets. SU takes on third-seeded Methodist in the USA South Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at 9 a.m. in Burlington, N.C.
