CLAREMONT, Calif. - Shenandoah University senior Amy Smith completed her outstanding track career Thursday night with a 10th place finish in her steeplechase heat at the NCAA National Championships.
Smith, who was matched up with the nation's top seed, Amherst's Keri Lambert, in the opening heat, ran an 11:25.04 to finish 10th in the event.
The top five finishers in each of the two heats, along with the next four fastest times, advance to Saturday's final.
Thursday's race was the final one in an SU career in which Smith won a USA South Conference cross country championships, ODAC and MAC indoor track championships in the DMR and 5000 meters and an ODAC outdoor championship in the steeplechase.
Smith is a three-time All-Region honoree in cross country and is the only SU cross country/track athlete to qualify for the national championships in both sports.
