WINCHESTER, Va. – Approximately once a year, the prevailing wind at Bridgeforth Field shifts and blows toward left field rather than its usual direction of toward right.

Wednesday was that day in the No. 11/21 Shenandoah Hornets 14-11 ODAC victory over Eastern Mennonite.

SU (11-2-1, 8-1 ODAC) took advantage of that wind shift to hit four home runs to left, including first-ever shots from John Wilt and Billy Arens and the second-ever dinger for Ricky Pardo, to down the Royals (8-9, 2-3).

Despite giving up the four home runs and falling behind 4-0 thanks to a four-run Shenandoah second, Eastern Mennonite found itself in a tie ballgame thanks to a five-run sixth that knotted the score at 8-8.

EMU banged out 16 hits of its own and benefitted from four SU errors (three in that sixth inning) to make the game competitive until the Hornets pulled away with three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Shenandoah took the lead for good by answering that five-run EMU sixth with one of its own in the bottom of the frame.

Ryan Mossman, who ended up on the mound for the Hornets, had a groundball to short that went for an error and allowed Michael Paul to come around from second with the go-ahead run.

Arens and Wilt went back-to-back in the seventh, with Arens' a two-run shot to give SU some breathing room.

EMU scored three runs with two outs in the ninth before Mossman induced a game-ending groundout to short.

Designated hitter Nolan Overby, who had the Hornets first HR of the game, led the offense with a 3 for 4 day that included three RBI.

Arens, Pardo and J.J. McDaniel all had two hits.

Freshman Ryan Kinter (1-0), the fourth SU pitcher of the day, earned his first-ever win. He struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Mossman got the final six outs in a non-save situation.

Aaron Hooven (0-2), the fourth of six pitchers took the loss. He allowed three runs on three hits in one inning of work.

Shenandoah continues ODAC play on Saturday when it travels to No. 7/8 Randolph-Macon for a noon doubleheader.
