Baseball Defeats Bridgewater

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. - It took eight days, but No. 9/13 Shenandoah University defeated Bridgewater College 3-2 Wednesday afternoon in ODAC baseball action.

The Hornets (17-4-1, 12-2 ODAC) were two outs away from victory over the Eagles (17-10-1, 8-7) when the heavens opened up April 8 in Winchester.

The game was suspended at that point and picked up this afternoon, with SU reliever Ryan Mossman, recording the final two outs to earn his second save of the spring.

Mossman got designated hitter Justin Petock to fly to center and Brandon Poole to pop to second to close out the contest.

On April 8, Mossman struck out Darren Yoder to start the ninth, but Kenner Berry doubled to right center followed by a Brendan Howell walk to put the go-ahead run on base.

As Mossman was preparing to throw his first pitch to Petock, a lightning bolt flashed and play was immediately halted.

During the mandatory 30-minute delay due to lightning, rain began and radar indicated that showers would remain in the area for approximately two more hours.

The game was then officially halted and by ODAC rule, was picked up today prior to the regularly scheduled meeting between the two teams.

Mossman saved it for freshman Colin Morse (4-0). Morse tossed the first 6.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks.

Morse struck out seven, including the first two hitters he faced and all three in the third.

Junior lefty Ryan Leake (3-3) took the loss for the Eagles - he allowed the three runs (just one earned) on four hits and one walk in 5 1/3.

Leake struck out three before turning it over to Steven Woerner, who induced an inning ending double play in the sixth.

That twin killing is one of three that BC has turned in the game - SU hit into inning-ending double plays in the first and fifth in addition to the sixth.

Shenandoah scored a single run in the first without a benefit of a hit, and after Bridgewater scored twice in the top of the fifth, answered with two in its half of the frame to jump back in front.

John Wilt led the SU offense with two hits and an RBI in four at-bats.

The Eagles committed six errors which led to two of the three runs against being unearned.
