FERRUM, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's tennis team was victorious Friday in its initial outdoor match of the spring season.
After splitting two indoor matches to start the season, Shenandoah (2-1) was a 6-2 winner on the Burrows-Skeens Courts on the Ferrum College campus Friday.
The Hornets opened the match by defeating Ferrum (2-4) at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles with Morgan Fuqua and Melodie Madison winning 8-2 at No. 1 and Denise Vollmer and Audrea Wright 8-1 at No. 3.
Fuqua and Alyssa White, playing Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, each won in three sets to put Madison in position to clinch the match at No. 3.
Madison wasted little time in securing the win, dispatching Autum Murray-Burns 6-3, 6-1 to give Shenandoah the clinching fifth point.
With the match now clinched, the final three singles matches were played as eight-game pro-sets.
Wright won her match 8-2 at No. 5 while Denisa Banasova was leading 6-5 in her match at No. 6 when it was called due to rain.
Fuqua won 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) at No. 1 and White 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (13-11) at No. 2.
SU travels to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center Saturday to take on Guilford in a 1:30 ODAC contest.
