WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's tennis team opened its season Friday night with a 5-4 non-league victory over DII Shippensburg University.
The Hornets (1-0) opened with a pair of wins in doubles before earning the victory over the Raiders (0-5) with wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 6 singles.
Freshman Madison Rogers had the match-clinching victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Megan Moorhead at No. 6 singles.
After extending its lead to 3-1 following Morgan Fuqua's 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, Shenandoah saw Shippensburg tie the match at 3-3 thanks to victories at Nos. 3 and 4 singles.
Senior Alyssa White put SU one victory away from clinching with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 win at No. 2 before Rogers followed with the clincher.
Shippensburg had a three-set win at No. 5 to provide the final margin.
Fuqua and Rogers were both double-winners on the day. Fuqua combined with Madison Hansen to win 8-2 at No. 1 doubles while Rogers paired with Emma Crue to win 9-7 at No. 3.
Shenandoah is back in action on Wednesday in Hilton Head, South Carolina versus Defiance (Ohio).
