Women's Tennis Wins Again

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Shenandoah University women's tennis team recorded its second straight victory of the 2018 spring season with a 5-4 non-league victory over Defiance (Ohio) College.

Playing as part of the Spring Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, South Carolina, the Hornets (2-0) recorded their second 5-4 win of the season with the defeat of the Yellow Jackets (3-15) in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Shenandoah took a 2-1 lead following the doubles thanks to wins in the top two matches. Alyssa White and Melodie Madison opened with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 before Morgan Fuqua and Madison Hansen were 8-6 winners at No. 1.

Fuqua, Melodie Madison and Emma Crue had the singles wins to close out the victory.

Madison had the first singles win, taking out Mackenzie Combs 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 with Fuqua immediately following with a win by the same score over Hannah Hesterman at No. 1.

Defiance answered back with a close win at No. 2 to cut its deficit to 4-3 only to see Crue win 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 to clinch the Shenandoah victory.

DC won the final match, at No. 6, with the outcome already decided.

The Hornets are back in action on Saturday, March 17 with a 2 p.m. ODAC match at Virginia Wesleyan.
