FOREST, Va. – Shenandoah University had nine football players earn All-ODAC honors in selections announced Wednesday afternoon by the league office.

SU, which finished its 2021 season with a Yoder-era best 7-3 record, has four players on each side of the ball earning All-league honors.

First-year Steven Hugney headlines this group by being named as the league's Rookie of the Year.

Hugney, the Hornets starting quarterback, is the first player in program history to be named as the league's Rookie of the Year.

Seniors Brant Butler and Mason Caldwell back up Hugney with first team selections at wide receiver and defensive line, respectively.

Seniors Trammell Anthony, Ben Burgan, and Rashadeen Byrd Jr. were named to the second team along with sophomore David Munoz.

Senior Jordan Rice and first-year Carter Runyon round out the honorees as third team selections.

Anthony was picked at defensive back, Burgan at linebacker, Byrd Jr. at running back, Munoz on the offensive line, Rice at defensive line, and Runyon at tight end. Burgan, Byrd Jr., Caldwell, and Rice are all two-time All-ODAC honorees with the first three selected to the second team last season and Rice to the third team in 2019.

Hugney started all 10 games at quarterback this season for the Hornets and finished the year 143-for-252 for 1639 yards and 13 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. He also added 172 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

In the week six 52-25 victory at Guilford, Hugney finished the day 16-of-31 for 285 yards and four touchdowns. This earned him ODAC Player of the Week honors.

The Fairfax native finished third in the league in touchdown passes and fourth in passing yards per game.

Butler led the ODAC in receptions and receptions yards per game this season with 58 catches for 905 yards and seven touchdowns. He was named as the league's offensive Player of the Week in week five after pulling down eight receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-27 win over Bridgewater.

His final catch, with 27 seconds remaining, gave SU the game-winning points.

Caldwell, one of the Hornets two co-captains, had 50 tackles (29 solo) and three sacks along with 10.5 tackles for loss this fall.

In week two, following a nine-tackle performance at N.C. Wesleyan, he was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for the second time in his career.

Byrd Jr. once again led the Hornets in rushing with 820 yards and 11 touchdowns on 185 carries. His 11 rushing TDs gave him a program-record tying 29 for his career.

Munoz and Runyon helped anchor an offensive line that finished fourth in the league in yards per game, 356.9, and third in passing, 221.1. Shenandoah was third in the league in both categories in ODAC play.

Burgan, with 136 tackles, set a new program record for tackles in a season with his 13.6 tackles per game leading the nation. He registered double-digit tackles in nine of 10 games this past fall with a high of 20 tackles in the season-ending 14-6 victory over league champion Washington & Lee on Nov. 13. He was named as the league's defensive Player of the Week in week eight after posting 16 stops in a 9-7 victory over DII Emory & Henry.

Anthony also earned ODAC Player of the Week honors for defense with his coming in week 11. In that final week of the season, Anthony had 11 tackles (eight solo) and the game-clinching interception in the end zone as SU defeated Washington & Lee, 14-6.

Anthony, who also stars for the Hornets men's basketball squad, finished the year with 39 tackles (30 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss, three passes defensed and the one interception.

Rice, playing next to Caldwell for the majority of defensive snaps, had 17 solo tackles among his 36 stops with 8.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He also broke up one pass play.

The nine honorees increase the Hornets all-time total to 80 in 11 seasons of league play. Twenty-one of those 80 selections have been to the first team.
