AUSTIN, Texas – Women's soccer star
Maiya Pencile '21 has been named first team Academic All-District V in selections announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Â
Pencile, who graduated last month after just three years of undergraduate work, is now a candidate for Academic All-America.
Â
The chemistry major from Chester, Virginia graduated with a 3.84 GPA after posting a perfect 4.0 GPA for the spring, 2021 semester.
Â
A two-time All-ODAC honoree for the Hornets, Pencile earned third team honors for Coach
Elizabeth Pike '11 this season after leading the league in goals in the spring season.
Â
She earned ODAC Player of the Week accolades on March 9 after scoring a total of five goals in contests versus Randolph-Macon and Roanoke.
Â
Off-the-field, Pencile was an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar honoree, a member of ODK, an Academic All-State pick, and the President of the Hornets RED (racial equity and diversity) team.
Â
To be eligible for Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be starters or important reserves on their teams and have at least a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Nominees are then voted on by athletic communications professionals in eight districts across the country. First team honorees then move on to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
Â
Shenandoah University has had 19 students named Academic All-America since 1998. Pencile would be the fourth women's soccer player, and first since
Alex Wessel '18 in 2017, to earn the honor.
