Women's Lacrosse Flies Past Seahawks

Three Hornets score four goals each in 16-12 win

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University earned its first women's lacrosse victory of the season Saturday afternoon with a 16-12 non-league home win over St. Mary's of Maryland.

Three late first half goals would prove to be the difference maker for the Hornets (1-1) over the Seahawks (0-2).

IN BRIEF

It took just under four minutes for SU to take an early 3-0 lead thanks to a man-up, free-position goal from Gabriella Raspanti following Ainsley Buckner and Emily Onorato goals. Buckner found the net twice in the first, including a beautifully executed no-look goal.

The Seahawks went on a 6-2 scoring run in the second helping them tie the contest up at 6-6. Three goals in 90 seconds helped the Hornets regain the lead heading into the half, including Onorato scoring her third of the day with just 0.7 seconds showing on the clock.

The first 10 minutes of the third proved to be a back and forth battle with both teams scoring in rapid fashion. Lusy Gussio tallied four of her six goals for the 'Hawks in the third.

Shenandoah scored three straight goals to end the fourth ending the St. Mary's comeback attempt.

SMCM outshot SU 32-29 while the Hornets had six of the game's eight caused turnovers.

Shenandoah goalie Ashley MacFarlane stopped 11 shots on the day.

Reilly Cisar, Raspanti, Buckner, and Onorato all scored four goals for SU.

UP NEXT

The Hornets are back in action Tuesday, March 8th hosting Messiah at 4 p.m. in a non-conference game.
