WINCHESTER, Va. – No. 11 Messiah University scored the initial five goals of the game Tuesday afternoon to key a 19-10 non-league women's lacrosse victory over host Shenandoah.
The Falcons (3-2) scored 34 seconds in and had a 5-0 lead by the 7:40 mark in the first meeting between the two schools in the past 25 years.
IN BRIEF
Emily Lerch broke that five-goal run with a goal at 5:25 of the first for the Hornets (2-2), but the Falcons maintained control.
Lerch's goal, off of an
Emma Stiffler assist, started a run in which the two teams traded the final four goals of the opening stanza.
Unfortunately for the SU fans, Messiah closed out the first quarter scoring with a goal eight seconds prior to the buzzer and added three straight to start the second.
A pair of Stiffler goals at 6:37 and 1:30 brought the Hornets to within six at 10-4, but the Falcons again closed out the quarter with a final minute goal.
MU scored the initial two goals of the third before
Reilly Cisar and
Paige Padberg tallied back-to-back at 9:41 and 8:56 for the hosts.
The two teams then played in an even fourth quarter with each squad scoring four times.
Stiffler led the Hornets with two goals and five assists for seven points with Lerch scoring three goals and Cisar two.
Ashley MacFarlane had one save and
Erin Spaulding four for SU.
Messiah had a 27-24 edge in shots and 16-12 in groundballs. Shenandoah won 18 of 33 draws.
