Averett Sweeps Softball

Hornets Fall, 8-0 and 5-1

DANVILLE, Va. – Host Averett University had a pair of strong pitching performances Saturday in a non-league doubleheader sweep over the Shenandoah University softball team.

Averett (5-5) was an 8-0 winner in six innings in game one before completing the sweep over its once-and-future conference foe with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.

Shenandoah (3-7) was held to five hits in the opener before getting seven hits in game two.

GAME ONE RECAP
A five-run third inning coupled with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth gave the Cougars all of the offense they would need to end the contest one inning early.

Hannah Maltos had two of the Hornets five hits with Danielle McNeill, BayLee Jenkins, and Tiffany Bower getting the other three.

Megan Scalley (2-3) was the hard-luck loser after allowing seven runs (three earned) on eight hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings. She struck out four and four of the five runs in the third were unearned.

GAME TWO RECAP
Averett earned the sweep with two runs in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth of the nightcap.

Shenandoah scored its lone run with three hits in the fifth – Bower led off with a single up the middle and pinch runner Lexie Reid advanced to second on Scalley's single down the left field line.

Following a strikeout, Arlene Miller had a two-out single up the middle to score Reid from third.

Maltos (0-4) took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits and one walk in 5 2/3. She struck out two.

NOTABLE
Saturday's non-league DH versus Averett was just the second one with the Cougars since Shenandoah left the USA South following the 2012 season. This meeting now becomes an annual one as Averett is scheduled to join the ODAC on July 1.
