Anderson Wins No. 700

Hornets Open Double-Dip with 12-4 Win

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Shenandoah University Head Baseball Coach Kevin Anderson earned his 700th victory Saturday as a college baseball coach with a 12-4 ODAC win over Virginia Wesleyan in game one of a scheduled doubleheader. Game two was called for darkness after 11 innings with the two teams tied at 8-8.

Shenandoah (16-6, 3-2 ODAC) at least one run in each of the final six innings to pull away from the Marlins (10-9, 2-4) in game one.

GAME ONE RECAP
A five-run seventh, which followed a three-spot in the sixth, gave the Hornets a 10-2 lead. The two teams then split the final four runs of the contest with SU scoring single runs in the eighth and ninth and VWU getting two runs in the eighth.

The 18-hit attack was enough for Anderson to earn his 700th victory in 23 seasons of collegiate coaching. After winning 147 games at James Madison from 1994 through 1997, Anderson is now 553-233-1 (.703) in 19 seasons at Shenandoah. He has an overall record of 700-320-2 between the two schools.

Junior Jacob Faivre (5-0) struck out 10 over the first six innings to earn the win. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits.

Mike Verzaleno earned the save by pitching the final three innings. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out two.

Frankie Ritter, Sam Horn, and Logan Wood all had three hits with Pearce Bucher, Ryan Clawson, and Kooper Anderson getting two each.

Bucher drove in three runs on a two-run double in the sixth and single to right in the seventh.

GAME TWO RECAP
Down to their final out, the Marlins forced extra innings after hitting back-to-back home runs to tie the game at 8-8. Two extra innings failed to produce a winner and the game was called due to darkness.

After taking game one earlier in the day, SU scored first with a two-run second inning thanks to a Kooper Anderson two-run single.

Kyle Lisa slammed his team-leading seventh home run to left field in a seventh inning to key a three-spot for the Hornets. Lisa's two RBI hit helped SU extend its lead 7-3.

As was the theme of the game, VWU was able to tie the game with runs in innings seven through nine including four in that crucial final frame.

Shenandoah starter Reilly Owen pitched four innings striking out the Marlins five times in his outing. Tad Dean pitched the next three innings only allowing a single hit while striking out four.

Matt Moon and Anderson lead SU with two hits each. Anderson along with Lisa lead the team with two RBIs.
