Softball Sweeps Quakers

Hornets Win, 3-0 and 4-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Shenandoah University softball team opened up its ODAC slate Saturday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader at Guilford.

Shenandoah (5-9, 2-0 ODAC) was a 3-0 winner in the opener before completing the sweep over the Quakers (9-13, 0-2) with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
Senior Megan Scalley went the distance for in the opener by scattering three hits and three walks over the seven innings.

Scalley (3-4) allowed three runners to reach scoring position and retired of the last nine hitters she faced in order.

Shenandoah got all of the offense that Scalley would need in the third as BayLee Jenkins laced a two-out single through the left side to score Danielle McNeill from second.

In the sixth, Savannah Thorne had an RBI double followed by Lily Richichi's RBI single to provide the Hornets with some breathing room.

Scalley then retired the Quakers in order in the sixth and worked around a two-out walk in the seventh.

GAME TWO RECAP
Shenandoah recorded its first sweep over GC since the 2014 season with a 4-2 victory in game two.

With the bases loaded in the fifth and a 2-0 lead in the fifth, Rachael Blumenschine's name was called to pinch-hit for the Hornets.

The first year's single up the middle gave SU two insurance runs after putting tallies on the board in the first and third innings.

Tiffany Bower and Jenkins reached home on the single to give Shenandoah a 4-0 lead over the Quakers going into the bottom of the frame.

Picking up her first collegiate win in the circle, Hannah Maltos pitched through the sixth and kept her team out of trouble for the first four innings.

To open the bottom of the fifth, Caitlyn Ray sent a double into right-center field and scored on an error three batters later.

From second base, Ally Morales crossed home plate on a fielder's choice and throwing error.

Maltos and the defense kept GC out of contention by striking out Nikki Tuttle and Alexis Lester flying out.

Striking out four Quakers and walking two, Maltos scattered six hits in 109 pitches. Both runs allowed were unearned.

Kayla Stepehnson relieved the first-year pitcher and earned the save by retiring three batters in order on a force-out and two ground outs.

Jenkins, McNeill, and Arlene Miller all recorded two hits and all reached home.

A Taylor Smith single brought home McNeill in the first and Bowers drove in Miller in the third inning.
